Altered Carbon is a story about oppression, marginalization, and violence. All three of these factors are used to oppress and keep down the lower class raising ethical questions about identity, personhood, and the value of a human life. As the wealthy could achieve immortality, while the poor cannot and their bodies are used as sleeves (new bodies for the wealthy). This is an analog to the Chinese Social Credit System surrounding the exploration of societal control, surveillance, and the consequences of technology.
